Our Montessori Curriculum & Activities

The Montessori Curriculum
The Montessori curriculum is a carefully developed teaching method. It is a hands-on approach that capitalizes on a child’s natural curiosity and love of learning. It is a sequential and thorough academic program that prepares children for the transition to middle school and beyond, whether to a public, private, or parochial school. In fact, most Montessori students are more academically advanced than their non-Montessori peers.

We use materials in our classrooms that Ms. Montessori designed herself. These materials allow children to learn by doing as opposed to receiving lectures or textbook assignments. We teach and encourage our students to become self-motivated, independent learners . We focus on quality education, rich in science, history, geography, and math.  The Colonel Shepard Montessori School offers Spanish to all Kindergarten and Elementary students. We also have private piano and computer lessons available during school hours.

Standardized Testing
At the end of the school year parents and teachers have the opportunity to assess student progress with our annual standardized testing with The Iowa Test of Basic Skills. Our children always have outstanding results!

Extracurricular Activities
Our school has a wonderful PTO that promotes a strong sense of community. The PTO welcomes participation from all families in the school. It organizes many enrichment activities - during and after school - for our students. Activities the PTO has organized in the past include a Ski Club, an after-school art program through The Currier Art Museum, and field trips to places such as the Palace Theater, The Mariposa Museum, a Fisher Cats baseball game, and more.
